2-1-1: Connecting People with Resources

A Free, Easy-To-Remember Number
Available Throughout United States

Des Moines, IA –– People who are in need of human services information may now simply dial 2-1-1 anywhere in the United States. The easy-to-remember and universally recognizable number will make it possible for callers in need to easily make critical connections with appropriate community-based organizations and government agencies.

        2-1-1 currently serves approximately 112 million Americans - over 36% of the US population. There are 167 active 2-1-1 systems in 33 states plus Washington, DC. In Iowa, all 99 counties are served by one of eight 2-1-1 Call Centers located across the state. To locate the 2-1-1 service in your area, click here!

        While services that are offered through 2-1-1 vary from community to community, 2-1-1 Iowa provides callers with information and referrals to human services for everyday needs and special needs times of crisis. An example of 2-1-1 Iowa's referral services across the state include: 

Basic Human Needs: food banks, clothing closets, shelters, rent assistance, utility assistance, affordable housing, Section 8 agencies

Physical and Mental Health Resources: health insurance programs, Medicaid and Medicare, maternal health, Children's Health Insurance Program, medical information lines, crisis intervention services, support groups, counseling, drug and alcohol intervention, and rehabilitation

Employment Supports: job placement and training, transportation assistance, education programs.

Support for Older Iowans and Persons with Disabilities: adult day care, congregate meals, Meals on Wheels, respite care, home health care, transportation, homemaker services

Support for Children, Youth and Families: child care, after school programs, Head Start, family resource centers, summer camps, recreation programs, mentoring, tutoring, protective services

Volunteer Opportunities and Donations: agencies looking for volunteers, organizations who have volunteers to serve the public, disaster donations, food banks, clothing closets

Legal and Governmental Information: legal clinics, police and fire programs, local school and library information, state Senators and Representatives, and administrative government agencies
